When do you need a new timing belt?

5 warning signs it’s time to replace the timing belt

There are some warning signals that can help you diagnose when a new timing belt is needed, but it is important to remember that prevention is the key to optimal vehicle maintenance, because there is no indication that belt wear may be close to breaking.

Listed below are five key signs to be aware of that may help you determine if it’s time to check and get a new timing belt.

1.Engine misfires

The timing belt operates through a pulley system that operates the camshaft and crankshaft. The teeth used for this purpose are used for grasping and moving smoothly, but if the timing belt starts to wear, it may make repeated clicking or clicking noises from the inside of the engine.

2.Smoke after starting the vehicle’s engine

Belt wear and stretching will damage the catalyst because the composition of the mixed fuel is incorrect and the fuel is not completely burned in the combustion chamber. This means that all unconsumed fuel is directed to the exhaust system. If you hear a click when starting the engine and see black smoke from the exhaust pipe of the vehicle, it indicates that the fuel composition is incorrect, which may be caused by damage to the timing belt and other reasons.

3.Difficulty starting

When the timing belt is connected to the pulley that drives the crankshaft, the worn timing belt will affect the starting speed of the engine. Finally, the belt will slide on the camshaft drive, causing the engine cylinder to open and close at the wrong time.

The stretching or wear of the timing belt will cause it to skip one or more teeth, so the ignition time of the engine will be extended. In addition, as we mentioned, jumping or sliding of the belt will cause the engine to be out of step.

4.Belt appearance

If we are checking the car or going to the garage, the first sign of belt wear is its appearance. Small cracks can be seen on the whole workpiece. If the crack propagates, the internal thread of the crack can be seen. In addition, another sign is that small pieces or fragments of belt material fall off and eventually fall into the whole engine.

5.Loss of voltage

Another sign of high-grade belt wear is high elongation. When this happens, the tension will be lost, thus reducing the deflection force of the belt. This will first cause the belt to slip, or worse, the belt will fall during engine operation. Belt slipping or jumping will cause the engine to be out of synchronization, which may lead to piston/cam collision, leading to catastrophic engine failure.

AYREST TIP:

The timing belt must be in good condition so that your car can start correctly. If your seat belt is damaged, when you turn the key, you may hear the sound of the starter engaging, but the engine will not ignite.

If the timing belt is broken internally, the engine will not start because the timing belt is a component connecting the crankshaft and camshaft and will not rotate. If this condition occurs in addition to any of the above warning signals, it may be caused by a broken timing belt.

Here, it is the only wise solution to ask professionals to provide suggestions. If the problem is caused by the timing belt, it may cause other engine compartment damage, so the situation may be quite serious.
