How to clean the air filter
The vehicle's air filter is critical to maintaining engine performance. It allows clean air to combine with fuel, burn and generate power for the vehicle. As time goes on, the accumulation of dirt, dust, pebbles, etc. will block the air flow. If your filter is dirty, your engine needs to work harder to draw in air or cool it. Eventually, these unwanted materials will be sucked into the engine from the air inlet on the road, which may damage the piston and block the carburetor.
There are two different types of air filters: oil coated and dry. Typical dry filters are made of foam, which blocks more particles than paper filters. However, due to the density of their materials, they are known to inhibit airflow when they become dirty. It should be cleaned or replaced every 15000 miles or more frequently if you live on dusty roads or in more polluted areas.
Oil coated filter, such as recognized K&N ® The filter adopts oiled cotton mesh structure. The K&N air filter needs to be thoroughly cleaned only when parts of the screen are no longer visible, or approximately every 50,000 miles.
When cleaning the air filter of the car, be sure to use a cleaner, which can completely remove dirt and debris without using petroleum based chemicals, which will damage or dissolve the filter material. Therefore, the use of solvents or kerosene should be avoided.
Air filter cleaning instructions:
Before cleaning the air filter, consult the owner's manual. Always follow the manufacturer's complete cleaning and maintenance instructions. Ensure that the engine is cool before cleaning.
1.Remove the filter.
Take out the air filter and be careful to ensure that no dust or debris falls into the air box or air inlet. If there is any housing on the filter, remove the housing and the wing nut connecting the filter to remove the external element.
2.Apply cleaning solution and let it soak.
3. Flushing.
Use a tap or garden hose to flush the filter from both sides, from the inside to the outside, to prevent dust from further entering the filter fibers. Avoid kinking or stretching filters - they tear easily. Rinse until the water is clear. Repeat the process if necessary.
4. Dry.
Shake the filter to remove excess water, then dry it in air. Make sure that the filter is completely dry before refueling (if you have a refueling filter) and replacement.
5. Add oil and replace.
If there is oil on your filter, saturate the entire filter with fresh filter oil, including the sealing flange and sealing lip. Modern vehicles using mass air flow (MAF) sensors require special care when re lubricating these types of filters to avoid over lubrication and affecting the MAF sensitive wires. This may cause it to measure the air consumption incorrectly and cause the "Check Engine" lamp to light up. Spray oil evenly along the top of each fold on the filter. The excess liquid is then extruded and the filter returned to its housing.
