How to select the correct fuel filter?
Micron grade and component type description
Fuel injectors, carburetors, and electric fuel pumps may be damaged by relatively small particles. In order to maintain the best performance of your car, you need to choose a filter with the correct micron grade and filter element type.
Micron rating
A micron is too small to be seen by the naked eye. The micron rating of the filter is usually between 2 and 100. The lower the value, the smaller the particles can be reliably filtered out. You don't always want the lowest micron filters because they clog. Follow these recommendations depending on the location of the filter and the type of fuel system.
1.100 micron filter is usually used as a pre filter to protect the fuel pump and prevent large debris from clogging the post pump filter. They can be installed in front of the pump or in the tank. The prefilter in the fuel tank is usually referred to as a "sock filter" or a "fuel filter"
2.40 micron filter is usually used for vaporized engines after the fuel pump. It is a good idea to use them with 100 micron pre filters, even with mechanical fuel pumps.
3.10 Micron filters must be used with 100 micron prefilters after being used as fuel filters for fuel injection engines.
Fuel filter element and compatible fuel
Fuel compatibility, reusability, and location in the fuel system should be considered when selecting filter element materials.
1.Paper filters are often referred to as cellulose filters and are usually disposable.
2.Paper filters shall not be used with fuels containing more than 20% methanol or ethanol
3.Stainless steel filters are compatible with all fuels and can usually be cleaned and reused.
4.Micro Glass filters are only used after the pump and are disposable.
