When To Change a Hydraulic Filter
In this modern era, most hydraulic filters have indicator lights that will inform you when they are replaced. Green indicates that the filter is good. However, once it turns yellow, it is time to change the filter. Yellow indicates that the filter is beginning to block. This reduces performance, so it is important to replace the filter when the indicator turns yellow.
If the indicator turns red, the hydraulic filter must be replaced immediately. Bypass (not filtering) is occurring, and the only remedy is to replace the filter as soon as possible.
In addition to checking the indicator, the hydraulic filter should be checked during regular preventive maintenance every 400 hours. You should check the filter to see if there is back pressure. If the hydraulic oil has back pressure, replace the filter at this time (even though the indicator is green, it is close to yellow)
The hydraulic oil monitoring can also determine if the filter needs to be replaced. If the oil contamination is satisfactory, the filter is operating and does not need to be replaced. If the level starts to change, it's probably time to change the filter.
